In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you. (Warren Buffet)
Recruitment is nerve wracking on both sides of the table. The usual HR systems may tell you if someone has the skills to do the job, but not HOW they will do it. How do you judge whether someone has integrity?
- Do they consistently adhere to values which reflect those of your organisation?
- Do they come across as just, frank and kindly?
- Do they exhibit a genuine belief in what they are doing and saying?
- Do they apparently think they are superior to colleagues? Test out why.
- How have they handled power in the past?
Short term, their intelligence and energy might get you where you want to be - is that enough? Examine your circumstances honestly, how important is integrity to your team, and is there enough of it?
