Understanding organisations …

If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it wouldn't seem wonderful at all. (Michelangelo)

I used to envy those lucky people who seem to glide through life, knowing the right people, making the right contacts, and saying the right things at the right time. But then I realised that understanding how to perform well in organisations takes research and practice.

  • Where does the power really lie, and who is the gatekeeper to it?
  • Who are the mythic heroes? What does that tell you about the corporate culture?
  • What are the unwritten rules of your organisation?
  • Which informal channels of communication actually work best?
  • Who and what really matter?

Once you know the character of the place or group of which you are part, it is much easier to make things happen. But it is a constant study …

This week Kathy is keenly aware that she needs to improve her diary management (Carlisle and Aberystwyth on two consecutive days?!) and she feels she may have overdone the supply side of the courgette food chain.
